#22/23 Men's Soccer Thwarts Rowan as Thayer Tallies Two Goals

10/17/07

Senior midfielder Jeritt Thayer tallied two goals and an assist in the first 9:37 to power the New York University men's soccer team to a 5-1 victory over Metropolitan Region rival Rowan University in its regular-season home finale at Fordham University in the Bronx, NY.

Ranked #22 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas National Rankings and #23 by d3kicks.com, the Violets (10-3-1) won their second straight match while snapping Rowan's (10-6-2) five-game winning streak.

A 2006 NSCAA and d3kicks.com All-American, Thayer created a 2-0 cushion with two strong shots in the first 4:44. First, he blasted a free kick past the Profs' wall from about 30 yards out at 2:31. At 4:44, the senior took a strong cross from junior forward Adam Dhanens and one-timed it into the top right corner from 10 yards out.

Not only did Thayer end that flurry with his team-leading 11th goal of the season, he also helped NYU continue one of its finest first halves in recent memory. He rocketed a shot off his right foot that bounced off the mitts of the Rowan goalkeeper, but right to senior midfielder Matthew Ramirez, who tapped home the rebound for his fourth score this season.

Rowan cut the deficit to 3-1 when senior forward Sean Goldsworthy tallied his first goal of 2007 off a feed from senior midfielder Peter Malkmus.

NYU tacked on two more scores in the first half: junior forward Branden Neal netted his fifth score at 26:29, before freshman midfielder Anthony Tumbiolo netted his first collegiate score off an assist by junior defender Devin Freeman-Roche at 29:52

Sophomore Marek Urbanski improved to 3-0 in his third career start, making three saves in 81:10 before junior Stephen Fragaszy came on for the final 8:50.

For Rowan, senior Kevin Nuss made one save and squandered four goals in 26:29. Freshman Dave Schindewolf allowed one goal and made four saves in 44:52, before freshman Charles Cunliffe came on for the final 18:39.

NYU owned a 19-8 edge on shot and held a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks.

NYU returns to the pitch Sunday, Oct. 21, when it travels to face St. Joseph's College (Long Island) in Patchogue, New York.
