#15/19 Men's Soccer Overcomes Chicago 3-2 Behind Dhanens

10/14/07

Junior forward Adam Dhanens netted a pair of goals, including the game-winner with 15:19 remaining, and added an assist as the New York University men's soccer team scored a 3-2 victory over University Athletic Association (UAA) rival the University of Chicago on Sunday afternoon at the College of Staten Island.

All told, Dhanens produced a career-best five points as the Violets (9-3-1, 2-2 UAA), ranked #15 by d3kicks.com and #19 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas National Rankings, snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 10-8-2 all-time against the Maroons (6-6-1, 1-2-1 UAA).

Dhanens helped NYU pull away with two tallies in an 83-second span. First, he buried his second goal of the match and fifth of the season at 74:21, finishing a 2-on-1 opportunity off a nifty feed by junior forward Brandon Neal. It was Dhanens' fifth goal and Neal's sixth assist. At 75:44, Dhanens set up junior midfielder Robert Keller, who grounded a shot across the goal line from five yards out to make it 3-1.

However, the Maroons pulled within 3-2 at 82:34 when senior midfielder Stuart Phelps converted a penalty kick into the lower left corner after a Violet foul in the box.

NYU opened the scoring at 14:46 when Dhanens collected a pass from freshman midfielder Samir Ibrahim and grounded it into the right far corner from about 15 feet out.

Chicago tallied the equalizer at 49:40 when freshman midfielder Ryan Fitzgerald floated a shot that snuck in just under the cross bar. The assist on the Maroons' goal went to senior forward Andrew Hamilton.

Sophomore Marek Urbanski got his second career start between the pipes for the Violets and notched four saves, including several acrobatic stops.

Freshman Steven Baron made two saves for Chicago.

Prior to the match, NYU honored its four seniors on Senior Day: co-captains Jeritt Thayer and Nicholas Palmer, midfielder Matthew Ramirez, and defender Matthew Tier.

NYU returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 17, when it hosts Metropolitan Region rival Rowan University in its final regular-season home match. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Fordham University's Jack Coffey Field in the Bronx, NY.
