In a battle of top-25 teams and University Athletic Association (UAA) powers, the New York University men's soccer team allowed two second-half goals and dropped a 2-1 decision to Washington University on Friday afternoon at Manhattan College's Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

Ranked #15 by d3kicks.com and #19 in the National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA)/adidas National Rankings, the Violets (8-3-1, 1-2 UAA) suffered their second consecutive setback despite dominating in shots (23-8) and corner kicks (9-2).

NYU cut a 2-0 deficit in half when junior forward Branden Neal netted his fourth goal of the season at 85:18 by converting a rebound of a shot from freshman midfielder Anthony Tumbiolo that caromed off the post. It was the seventh assist of the season for Tumbiolo, who paces the UAA in assists per match.

However, the Bears (9-3, 2-1 UAA), ranked #21 by the NSCAA/adidas and #23 by d3kicks.com, capitalized on their two top chances to improve to 17-3 all time against NYU. At 46:45, sophomore forward John Hengel converted a feed from freshman back Alex Neumann for his fourth score of the season.

Washington seized a 2-0 advantage when freshman forward Harry Beddo netted his fifth goal off a pass from senior back Elie Zenner that did not come without controversy. It appeared that Violet freshman midfielder Samir Ibrahim had cleared the ball off the goalline after Zenner's corner kick, but the assistant referee counted the score as the Bears upped their lead.

Sophomore John Smelcer stopped eight shots in the win for Washington.

NYU junior Chris Wright made one save in the loss.

The Violets return to action Sunday, Oct. 14, when they host UAA opponent the University of Chicago at 11am at the College of Staten Island. Prior to the match, NYU will honor its four graduating seniors: senior co-captains Jeritt Thayer and Nicholas Palmer, midfielder Matthew Ramirez, and defender Matthew Tier.
