#8/9 Men's Soccer Succumbs to Rochester 1-0 in UAA Road Tilt
10/06/07
An early first half goal snapped the New York University men's soccer team's shutout streak and eventually its eight-game undefeated run in Saturday evening's 1-0 loss at the University of Rochester.
Ranked #8 by d3kicks.com and #9 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas National Rankings, the Violets (8-2-1, 1-1 UAA) dropped their first University Athletic Association (UAA) contest this season. Meanwhile, the Yellowjackets (8-3-1, 2-0 UAA) stretched its win streak to five matches.
Rochester produced the only offense Saturday at 16:23 after a chip into the box caromed off NYU junior goalkeeper Chris Wright's hands. Yellowjacket sophomore midfielder Scott Cady pounced on the loose ball and buried it into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
The goal snapped NYU's shutout streak at 524:06, the second-longest scoreless stretch in school history behind the program record of 571:03 set in 2005. The Violets had not allowed a goal since a 2-2 tie against Richard Stockton College on Sept. 12.
This battle of two of the UAA's top programs proved to be a defensive struggle, with both teams combining for just 12 shots (NYU 7, Rochester 5) and seven corner kicks (NYU 4, Rochester 3).
Wright made two saves in the loss for the Violets, while sophomore Mike Peacock put aside two NYU attempts.
NYU returns to action Friday, Oct. 12, when it hosts UAA rival Washington University. Match time is 11 a.m. at Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY. It is also a "Tear It Up" Event.
