#11/12 Men's Soccer Tames Hunter 3-0
09/26/07
Junior Branden Neal assisted on a pair of goals as the New York University men's soccer team extended its undefeated streak to seven matches with a 3-0 triumph over Hunter College on Wednesday night at Fordham University's Jack Coffey Field in the Bronx.
Ranked #11 by d3kicks.com and #12 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas National Rankings, the Violets (7-1-1) extended their shutout streak to 419:49, the second longest in team history behind the school-record span of 571:01 set in 2005.
"It's nice to have this run of shutouts going into the UAA schedule playing Case Western Reserve University on Saturday," NYU head coach Joe Behan said.
NYU trotted out a starting 11 featuring three first-time starters in sophomore goalkeeper Marek Urbanski and freshmen Nick Risler and Zachary Perris. In addition, rookies Michael Burke and Olatunji Williams started just their second collegiate games.
Perris rewarded Behan quickly with his second goal of the season just 11:16 into the match. Junior Branden Neal served a cross that Perris collected with his chest, balanced quickly and fired into the twine from 10 yards out.
Senior All-American Jeritt Thayer tallied his eighth goal of the season 46 seconds before halftime, converting a pass from senior Matthew Ramirez. Ramirez tacked on his third score of 2007 off a feed from Neal five ticks before the halftime horn to give NYU a 3-0 advantage. The Violets owned a 20-1 edge on shots in the first 45 minutes of play.
"Brandon's playing very well," Behan said. "He's becoming a more accomplished player as we move along. We've talked to him that it's not just about scoring goals, it's about being part of the attack."
Urbanski, junior Stephen Fragaszy and freshman Matt Stieve combined to record the clean sheet. Urbanski earned his first collegiate victory. Meanwhile, Stieve was the only netminder to make a save, doing so in the 89th minute.
For Hunter (1-9), junior Noah Fessler made 12 saves in 76:59 before yielding to freshman Andrew Knight, who put aside two shots.
NYU owned a 33-3 edge on shots and a 7-0 advantage on corner kicks. However, the Violets were whistled for 11 offside calls.
NYU returns to action Saturday, Sept. 29, when it opens its University Athletic Association (UAA) schedule against Case Western Reserve University (#2 NSCAA/adidas, #6 d3kicks.com). Kick-off is slated for 11:00 a.m. at Manhattan College's Gaelic Park in Riverdale. NYU won last season's meeting 1-0 on an unassisted goal by junior Adam Dhanens in the 10th minute.
