Junior forward Adam Dhanens netted two first-half tallies as the New York University men's soccer team settled for a 2-2 draw with Richard Stockton College in a battle of nationally ranked sides Wednesday night in Pomona, New Jersey.
Ranked #11 by d3kicks.com and #24 by the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas, NYU (3-1-1) extended its undefeated streak to three matches. Richard Stockton (4-0-1) is ranked #16 in the NSCAA/adidas poll and #24 by d3kicks.com.
"I was pretty happy with the performance," NYU assistant coach Jon Simos said. "Obviously we would have liked to get the win, but getting a tie on the road against a good side like Richard Stockton isn't a bad thing. Our guys proved they could play past 90 minutes. A lot of them played the entire game, and I liked the consistency with which they played."
Dhanens helped the Violets claim a 1-0 lead 2:47 into the action with his second score of the season. His third goal this fall came at 33:23 off a feed from junior forward Branden Neal, after which he fended off a defender and fired a shot into the back of the net.
"Adam did really well tonight," Simos said. "Hopefully, it opens the floodgates for him to score more goals."
Richard Stockton answered each of Dhanens scores with one of its own. At 27:45, A.J. Colubiale converted a pass from Eric Lewis. Then, at 50:11, the Ospreys washed away a 2-1 halftime deficit when Rafael Duarte hit the back of the net courtesy of an assist by Travis Albert.
Both squads manufactured solid scoring chances late in regulation and during the two extra sessions, but were stonewalled. Stockton goalkeeper Matt Hart (five saves) turned aside a header by senior midfielder Matt Ramirez, a shot by Dhanens and a free kick by senior All-American midfielder Jeritt Thayer. In addition, a shot by freshman forward Nick Coulson caromed off the post.
NYU junior goalkeeper Chris Wright was also solid between the pipes, making a season-high eight saves.
Stockton owned a 16-13 edge on shots and a 6-5 lead on corner kicks as the teams played to a 2-2 tie for the second straight year.
NYU returns to action Sunday, Sept. 16, when it travels to Willimantic, Connecticut, to face Eastern Connecticut State University. Start time is 3 p.m.
