#15/25 Men's Soccer Outlasts CCNY 5-1 Behind Dhanens, Tumbiolo
09/07/07
Junior Adam Dhanens netted his first goal of the season and added an assist, while freshman Anthony Tumbiolo set up a pair of scores, as the New York University men's soccer team produced a 5-1 victory over City College of New York in a non-conference men's soccer match at New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, NJ, on Friday night.
Dhanens was one of three players to produce his first tally of the season Friday night for the Violets (3-1), ranked #15 by d3kicks.com and #25 in the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division III Top 25. Freshmen Zachary Perris and Nick Coulson netted their first collegiate goals, while senior Matthew Ramirez contributed his first score of 2007 in the victory.
"Scoring five goals in any game is a feat in itself," NYU head coach Joe Behan said.
Although NYU owned the action throughout, it took the Violets until the 12:21 mark to finally tack on a tally. Senior All-American Jeritt Thayer netted his fifth goal of the season, heading home a well-placed free kick off the foot of Tumbiolo. Thayer has scored in each of NYU's four matches thus far, while Tumbiolo (five assists) has contributed an assist in three of the first four contests -- all on Thayer scores.
"He's got a sweet left foot," Behan said of Tumbiolo. "Hopefully, he'll keep it going for the rest of the season."
NYU led 3-1 at intermission as Dhanens buried a rebound of a shot by junior Branden Neal at 30:27. Then, Perris chipped home a Tumbiolo feed from 25 yards out at 40:36.
CCNY (0-2) pulled within two goals at 41:41 when sophomore Dennis Githui slid a ball across the box that junior Marvin Ellis converted from close range.
Ramirez returned the Violets to a more comfortable three-goal cushion when he slid home a well-timed pass from Dhanens at 49:02 to make it 4-1.
Coulson scored his first collegiate goal with 5:47 remaining, blasting home a pass from classmate Troy Matthews to cap the scoring.
"Those were two good goals," Behan said of Coulson's and Perris' tallies. "It was good to see two good finishes from the freshmen."
Overall, NYU possessed sizable advantages in shots (27-6) and corner kicks (8-2).
Junior Chris Wright started between the pipes for NYU and made two saves before yielding to junior Stephen Fragaszy, who also put aside two shots in the final 8:22.
Freshman Taiwo Alabi recorded nine saves for CCNY.
NYU returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 12, when it travels to Pomona, NJ, to face Richard Stockton College at 7 p.m. In the teams' last meeting on Oct. 23, 2006, the Violets overcame a 2-0 deficit to forge a 2-2 tie and extend their school-record unbeaten streak to 11 matches. Thayer contributed a goal and an assist in that contest.
