#4/8 Men's Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision to #9 Stevens in NCAA Rematch

In a rematch of the 2006 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship sectional semifinals featuring a pair of top-10 teams, the Stevens Institute of Technology earned a 2-1 victory over New York University in the Stevens College Classic at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Ranked #4 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll and #8 by d3kicks.com, NYU suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 1-1.

With the win, Stevens, #9 in the NSCAA and d3kicks.com rankings, exacted a measure of revenge after getting eliminated from the 2006 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship sectional semifinals by NYU. Although the Ducks and Violets ended regulation and two overtime periods in a 1-1 deadlock, NYU advanced 3-1 on penalty kicks.

NYU owned a 20-10 edge on shots, but could capitalize on their advances deep into Duck territory. Senior midfielder Jeritt Thayer, a Second Team NSCAA and Third Team d3kicks.com All-American in 2006, finally helped the Violets cut a 2-0 deficit in half after heading home a feed from junior forward Adam Dhanens at the 82:34 mark. It was Thayer's third goal of the season; he has accounted for all of the Violets' offense this season.

NYU had a corner kick with :15 remaining, but it sailed into the waiting hands of Stevens' freshman goalkeeper Zach Carr (six saves).

Stevens, meanwhile, made the most of its quality chances. The Ducks struck just 1:48 into the action when junior midfielder Jeremy Lippel beat two NYU defenders down the right side and lofted a cross right to wide-open senior forward Mike Kaiser, who headed the pass into a wide-open net to make it 1-0, Ducks.

Senior defender Sean Bliss added an insurance tally at 47:16, blasting a shot into the lower left corner after collecting an indirect kick by Lippel to give Stevens a 2-0 advantage. This opportunity came after the Violets were whistled for a foul deep in their territory.

Junior netminder Chris Wright recorded three saves for the Violets.

NYU returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 5, when it travels to Union, NJ, to face Metropolitan Region rival Kean University at 7 p.m. The Violets produced a 1-0 victory over the Cougars on Sept. 7, 2007, thanks to a goal by All-American junior midfielder Jeritt Thayer.
