Under a sunny, cloudless sky, a trio of New York University senior men's golfers capped their collegiate careers at the St. Peter's College Invitational on Tuesday at the Neshanic Valley Golf Club in Neshanic Valley, NJ.

After helping the Violets make a pair of NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship appearances in 2005 and 2006, the threesome of Andrew Gihm and co-captains Adam Krainson and Matt McGinnis were instrumental in the Violets carding a 309 to finish third out of a field of 12 programs -- most of which were Division I outfits.

Monmouth University won the team title with a 295, followed by Rider University's 300 and NYU.

Once they put their putters away on the 18th hole, each member of NYU's senior trio reflected on a memorable journey across several courses throughout their respective four-year careers.

"I had a great four years with Matt McGinnis and Andrew Gihm," Krainson said after his two-over-par 74 placed him fourth on the individual leaderboard. "Golf was one of the highlights of my last years."

"It was really unique," Gihm said of his experience after shooting a 77, second-best among the Violets. "How many New Yorkers do you know who get to play golf everyday?"

"It was a great ride," observed McGinnis after shooting an 83. "I've definitely met lifetime friends. The van rides were unforgettable. We had some great rounds, some bad rounds, but I take away the good."

Although there was a palpable sense of closure to their collegiate golf days once their final 18 holes were finished, the Violets' seniors played loose on their final set of swings.

"Obviously I wanted to shoot a good number," Gihm said. "But I just wanted to have a good time. I didn't want to look back on my last 18 and say I was upset. I just wanted to have fun."

Fun is just one of the things the trio of Gihm, Krainson and McGinnis will take away from their time at NYU. Together, they helped establish NYU as an annual NCAA contender, not to mention one of the top Northeast men's golf programs regardless of Division I, II or III status.

"The experience, work ethic, attitude and competition that they will have passed onto our younger players is invaluable," noted head coach Chris Kosiba. "Those three senior spots are going to be hard spots to fill. There's a lot of tournament experience with those guys."

However, the Violets will return sophomore Michael Leibfried (78) and junior Alex Hopson (80), both of whom have been All-University Athletic Association (UAA) selections, in 2008-09. Not to mention a promising group of underclassmen who will be looked upon to fill the spots being vacated by Gihm, Krainson and McGinnis.

"There's a strong foundation in place," McGinnis said. "We should be good for the next few years."
