Apoznanski, Women's Golf Make More History in Final Match of First Season

With each chance to swing their clubs, the New York University women's golf team finds a fresh opportunity to write a new chapter in its young history.

And so, Thursday afternoon at the Mayapple Golf Links presented another historic occasion for the women's golfers. Or, more specifically, freshman Theresa Apoznanski, a rookie to the collegiate golf game like the rest of her teammates who captured the first individual championship in NYU women's golf history at the Dickinson College Invitational.

Apoznanski capitalized on near-perfect conditions -- bright sun, clear skies and unusual mid-April warmth -- paced the field of 25 golfers with a five-over 77 on the par-72, 5,800-yard course. It proved to be the best round in the ever-developing history of NYU's program, but perhaps a portend of things to come over the next three seasons.

"She's capable of that week-in and week-out," NYU head coach Chris Kosiba said. "She's that good of a player."

In their final match of their first season, the Violets posted their best-ever performance, finishing one stroke in back of Gettysburg College with a 348 to take second in the five-team field.

Senior captain Gretchen Johnson made the most of her last collegiate event by shooting a personal-best 82 to take fourth, shooting one stroke better than the previous NYU record of 83 she posted last Sunday at the Vassar College Invitational.

Freshman Jea Min carded a career-low 91 to tie for 10th, while junior Kate McAleer scored a career-best 98 to forge a 16th-place tie for the Violets.

Freshman Joanna Lau finished with a 99 to take 17th. Meanwhile, junior Jordan Zuspann, playing as an individual, produced a personal-best 91 to knot Min for 10th.

All in all, a strong finish to a strong first season of women's golf at NYU.

"I'm ecstatic to end the season on this note," Kosiba said. "I think it's a huge step for the program."
