04/15/08

Despite getting a one-over par 73 from senior co-captain Adam Krainson in the final round, New York University finished third at the 2008 University Athletic Association Men's Golf Championships, held April 14-15 at Orange County National Golf Course in Orlando.

Krainson was the Violets' top performer, carding a two-round total of 148 to tie for fifth. Junior Alex Hopson shot a 76 in the final round to conclude with a 151, putting him in a tie for seventh place.

Krainson captured First Team All-UAA honors with his performances, while Hopson earned a spot on the Second Team All-UAA squad. Krainson is now a three-time All-Association selection, having garnered a spot on the Second Team in 2005 and 2007.

Overall, NYU scored a 314 on the second day of action for a 619 total, putting it four strokes behind second-place Carnegie Mellon University. Emory University captured the UAA Championship with a two-round tally of 591.

"I'm disappointed with our finish, but I'm happy for Krainson and Hopson," NYU head coach Chris Kosiba said. "I'm especially happy for Adam as a senior, I'm happy to see him end the tournament as he did.

"And with Hopson," Kosiba continued, "seeing him play this way in this type of tournament is good."

Also for NYU, sophomore Michael Leibfried finished 15th after shooting a second-round 81 for a final total of 159. Senior co-captain Matt McGinnis counted toward the Violets' scoring Tuesday with an 84, but finished 21st overall with an aggregate score of 164.

Senior Andrew Gihm carded an 86 over the final 18 holes, concluding with a score of 163 to tie for 19th.

Individually, the University of Rochester's Ryan Williams , also the Association Rookie of the Year, sat atop the leaderboard with a two-over 146.
