Men's Golf Tied for Second After First Day at UAA Championships

04/14/08

Sparked by solid performances along the back nine by senior co-captain Adam Krainson and junior Alex Hopson, New York University completed the first day of the 2008 University Athletic Association (UAA) Men's Golf Championships tied for second place overall Monday at the Orange County National Golf Course in Orlando.

On a warm, sunny day without much wind, Krainson shot an even-par 36 and Hopson carded a one-over 37 across the last nine holes, helping the Violets forge a second-place tie with the University of Rochester with a score of 305 on the par-72, 6,927-yard course. Both squads sit 19 strokes behind defending champion Emory University, which produced a two-under 286.

Overall, Krainson and Hopson finished the first day with a 75, tying them for eighth place on the individual leaderboard. Rounding out the Violets' scoring quartet were senior Andrew Gihm (77, t-11th) and sophomore and 2007 UAA Rookie of the Year Michael Leibfried (78, t-13th).

Also in action Monday for NYU was senior co-captain Matt McGinnis, who finished with an 80 despite shooting an even-par 36 on the front nine. McGinnis is tied for 16th.

"With the conditions out there, I thought we could have gone a little lower," NYU head coach Chris Kosiba said. "Overall, to me, that’s a good score to put on the board. I’m more interested in seeing if we can play well on back-to-back days, or play better tomorrow."

NYU will begin second round play Tuesday at 7:45 a.m. The Violets have never captured a UAA Men's Golf Championship, but have placed second in both 2004 and 2007.
