Led by the continued solid play of senior captain Gretchen Johnson and freshman Theresa Apoznanski, the New York University women's golf team completed its first day of competition at the Vassar College Invitational on Saturday at the Casperkill Country Club in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Overall, the Violets carded a team score of 376, putting them one stroke ahead of host Vassar (377) for eighth place. Williams College leads the field with a score of 337.

Johnson enjoyed a solid front nine, shooting a 41 at the outset, before finishing with a team-best 85 that tied her for ninth place out of 55 players. She is just four strokes off the first-place pace set by Williams' Melissa Barton and Rosie O'Connor of St. Mary's College (IN), both of whom scored a nine-over 81 on the par-72, 5,768-yard course.

Meanwhile, Apoznanski recorded an 86 and forged a tie for 13th on the leaderboard, putting her five stroke off the lead.

Also counting as part of NYU's scoring quartet were freshmen Jea Min (100, tied for 42nd) and Joanna Lau (105, 47th).

Junior Kate McAleer also competed for the Violets, with her score of 112 ranking 50th.
