Although they shaved a stroke off their previous day's total, the New York University men's golf team finished second out of 10 teams at the Babson College Spring Opener, which was held April 6-7 at the Atlantic Country Club in Plymouth, MA.
The Violets shot 316 on Monday to card a two-day total of 633 on the par-72, 6,728-yard course, putting them two strokes behind tournament champion Salem State College (631).
Senior Andrew Gihm was NYU's top finisher, placing fifth of 52 golfers with a two-day tally of 155, including a five-over 77 on Monday.
Junior Alex Hopson tied for sixth and shot a team-best 76 on Monday, concluding with a 157 for the Violets' second-best performance.
Sophomore Michael Leibfried carded a 79 both days and finished with an aggregate total of 158 to tie for 10th. Meanwhile, senior co-captain Adam Krainson shot a second-round 84 and produced a 163 over both days to finish 16th.
Also competing for NYU was senior co-captain Matt McGinnis, whose 85 on Monday gave him a two-round showing of 167. He ended up in a three-way tie for 20th.
"We put ourselves in position to win the tournament, but we didn't get the job done," NYU head coach Chris Kosiba said.
The Violets will hope for a better performance next Monday, April 14, when they compete in the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships at the Orange County National Golf Center in Winter Garden, FL. NYU finished second in the UAA last season, as Leibfried earned the Association's Rookie of the Year award.
