A pair of New York University women’s fencers competed at the NCAA Fencing Championships and combined to help the Violets post a 15th-place team finish.
The Championships were held Thursday-Sunday, March 13-16, at Ohio State University in Columbus, OH.
Competing in the NCAA's for the first time in their NYU careers were sophomore co-captain Alyxandra Mattison (sabre) and freshman Sophia Ciaravino (foil).
Ciaravino won a total of nine bouts (9-14) over the two days of the women's competition (Thursday and Friday) and wound up in 17th place overall.
Mattison posted an overall 7-16 record and a 19th-place finish.
"They fenced really well in a very tough tournament," said NYU assistant coach Lauren Willock. "With the way they performed, though, I expect they'll be back here again."
Overall, there were 24 competitors in each of the two weapons.
The performances of the two NYU women, combined with those of the two NYU men who competed on Saturday and Sunday (sophomores Sam Roukas and Jared Hammond), gave NYU an overall 15th-place finish in the 27-team competition.
The Violets finished ahead of all other NCAA Division III teams in a competition that included fencers from all three NCAA Divisions.
"It was a very exciting weekend for our team and for NYU," said Violet head coach Steven Mormando. "Everyone fenced great."
The Violets, with 37 total wins, edged 16th-place Yale University (35).
