The New York University women's fencing team won four of its five matches at the Brandeis University Invitational, which was held in Waltham, MA, on Saturday.

After falling to host Brandeis 14-13, the Violets swept through Boston College (18-9), MIT (16-11), the United States Air Force Academy (16-11), and Haverford College (18-9).

The successful day for the Violets lifted the team's overall record this season to 8-11.

"We went in very focused and and did what we needed to do to get some wins," said NYU assistant coach Lauren Willock. "It was a great way to finish off our last major road competition."

Individually, freshman Sophia Ciaravino was near-perfect on the day, claiming 14 (14-1) foil wins. Fellow freshman Amanda Rysling was 13-2 in the weapon.

Other top performers for the Violets included sophomore co-captain and Alyxandra Mattison and freshman Zainab Hasnain, each of whom went 10-5 in sabre.

Sophomore Sam Frons also went 10-5 to lead the epee team.

The Violets return to action on Wednesday, February 13, when they face Sacred Heart University, Hunter College and host Columbia University beginning at 5pm.
