Women Fencers Fare Well at Temple Open

The New York University women's fencing team began its 2007-08 season with competition at the Temple University Open in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, November 3.

No team scoring was kept, but several newcomers had outstanding individual debuts for the Violets

Competing in foil, freshmen Sophie Ciaravino and Amanda Rysling, each advanced to the final round of eight.

Ciaravino wound up tied for fifth place in the weapon, while Rysling posted an eighth-place finish. Ciaravino lost to the eventual champion, Kaitlin Williamson of the University of North Carolina, in her final bout.

Another NYU freshman, Joann Reyes, took 14th place in the weapon.

Overall, there were 102 foil competitors.

In sabre, sophomore captain Alyxandra Mattison finished 16th out of 78 competitors.

And, in epee, NYU's top finisher was sophomore Sam Frons, who took 18th of 85 competitors.
