Men's Fencing's Rodrigues Takes Sabre Championship in Collegiate Debut
11/03/07
Hugo Rodrigues, a freshman on the New York University men's fencing team, won the sabre championship as the Violets began their 2007-08 season at the Temple University Open in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, November 4.
With no team scores being kept, the Open was a chance for individuals to shine. And, that's what Rodrigues and several other NYU fencers did.
Winning 14 bouts without losing one, Rodrigues clinched the top spot with a 15-14 victory over Zach Brown of Rutgers University in the elimination round final.
Also faring well in the weapon for NYU was sophomore Sam Roukas (5th place), freshman Kyle Wilson (6th) and sophomore Tai Dimaio (8th).
Overall, 96 fencers competed in sabre.
Another NYU freshman, Byron Neslund, won 13 bouts and tied for third place in epee. Sophomore Andrew Stanko finished sixth and senior captain Phil Andrews took 10th place in the 104-man epee competition.
And, it was more young blood in the foil competition as NYU freshman Carrington Harris recorded 11 wins and took fifth place in the 95-man competition.
