
Men's Fencer Roukas Takes USFA Summer National Sabre Championship

New York University fencer Sam Roukas won the Summer National Championships in Division IA Men's Sabre on July 7 in Miami Beach, Florida.
Roukas defeated Alex Diacou of Columbia University 15-8 to take the gold medal and earn a United States Fencing Association "A" ranking, the highest ranking a member can receive.
After going 6-1 in pool play, Roukas was seeded seventh and received a first-round bye going into bracket play. He then went on to win his next five bouts, including a 15-8 victory over Hugo Rodrigues in the Round of Eight and a 15-13 defeat of Joe Pipken of the University of North Carolina to reach the gold medal round.
In his freshman year at NYU, Roukas won a team-best 36 bouts and finished 22nd at the NCAA Championships in the men's sabre competition, helping to lead NYU to its 14th consecutive top-20 finish.
A native of Milburn, New Jersey, Roukas is a rising sophomore in NYU's College of Arts & Science.
