Women's Basketball's McEntee Tabbed as UAA Co-Player of the Year
03/06/08
New York University junior forward Jessica McEntee was named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Women's Basketball Co-Player of the Year in a vote of Association coaches.
This is the second straight year McEntee was selected UAA Player of the Year, as she earned the award outright in 2007. She is the fourth Violet to ever be named the Association Player of the Year twice, and the first since Marsha Harris in 1996 and 1997.
McEntee enjoyed a historic season for NYU (14-11, 3-11 UAA), tying single-season marks in scoring average (21.5 ppg) and points scored (301) in UAA games. In addition, the 5-11 junior captain became the Association's all-time leader in free throws with 253, a year after establishing a new single-season standard with 117.
In 14 UAA games, she recorded 11 double-doubles, including a 28-point, 15-rebound effort as the Violets overcame a 10-point second-half deficit en route to a 57-47 victory over NCAA Tournament participant Brandeis University on Jan. 12. The Flushing, NY, native produced a Coles Sports Center-record 26 points in the second half and finished with 30 tallies in a 73-65 setback against the University of Rochester, another NCAA Tournament team, on Feb. 17.
Perhaps just as impressive was that McEntee played all 40 minutes on three occasions: Brandeis (Jan. 12), at Rochester (Jan. 18) and Carnegie Mellon University (Feb. 15). In the latter game, she was instrumental in the Violets overcoming a 20-point second half deficit as they notched a 59-49 victory.
This season, McEntee captured UAA Player of the Week honors seven times, more than any other Association player.
