Women's Basketball Tumbles at #24 Washington

02/24/08

In spite of junior Jessica McEntee's 16th double-double of the season and a promising second-half run, the New York University women's basketball team was stopped by University Athletic Association (UAA) rival and #24-ranked Washington University 71-55 at the WU Field House on Sunday in St. Louis.

McEntee finished with team highs of 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Violets (14-10, 3-10 UAA), moving into a ninth-place tie on the career scoring charts with Jennifer Miani (1,191, 1984-88).

Sophomore Jen Hum-Traverso also reached double digits for NYU, finishing with 10 points.

NYU trailed 35-29 at the break, then pulled with 35-32 with 17:47 remaining before the Bears (18-6, 10-3 UAA) spun off 19 of the next 25 points to take a 54-38 cushion with 7:54 remaining after a bucket by Zoey Unruh (15 points).

From there, the Violets immediately put together a 9-1 spurt capped by McEntee's three-point play with 5:19 left to get within 55-47.

However, Washington ran off the next 12 points, including consecutive three-pointers by Halsey Ward (12 points, 10 rebounds), to go ahead 69-49 with 2:08 remaining.

Janice Evans led Washington with 19 points. The Bears owned a 46-32 edge on the glass and shot 42.9% (27-for-63) from the field.

Freshman Emily Foshag added eight points for NYU, which shot 29.6% (16-for-54) from the floor.

NYU will wrap up its regular season Saturday, March 1, when it ventures to Waltham, MA, to face Brandeis University. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
