
Women's Basketball Succumbs to #23 Chicago, 84-64

Although there were spirited spurts of play, the New York University women's basketball team bowed to the University of Chicago 84-64 in University Athletic Association (UAA) action Friday night at the Ratner Athletic Center in Chicago.
Junior Jessica McEntee finished with team highs of 14 points and eight rebounds for the Violets (14-9, 3-9 UAA), who dropped their second straight contest. Sophomore Grace Carmen tied her career high with 13 points, while freshman Chelsea Blake produced 11 tallies for NYU.
Alex Leach led the Maroons (18-5, 9-3 UAA), who are tied atop the Association standings, by producing 11 of her game-high 19 points in the second half. Molly Hackney netted 14 of her 17 points in the second half and added five assists, while Nofi Mojidi poured in 16 and added six boards as Chicago placed five players in double digits.
Ranked #23 in the USA Today/ESPN Division III Coaches' Poll, Chicago took a 36-29 lead into the locker room at halftime as Lori Tanaka (10 points) scored seven straight points to break a 29-29 deadlock after NYU used an 18-8 rally. The Maroons led 58-44 with 10:26 remaining as Leach produced eight straight points before the Violets made their last rally, pulling within 60-55 with 8:01 remaining after a three-ball by freshman Emily Foshag.
From there, the Maroons scored on 11 possessions in succession to leave the Violets in their rearview mirror. Mojidi accounted for all 13 of her second-half point production during the outburst, as Chicago led 82-62 with 1:45 remaining.
Chicago shot 52.0% (26-50) from the floor, hitting 13 of its 25 shot attempts in each half, while going 6-for-9 (66.7%) from long range and 68.4% (26-for-38) at the charity stripe. The Maroons were 22-for-26 in the second half.
NYU shot 34.7% (25-for-72) from the field, including just 16.7% (3-for-18) from three-point range, and 78.6% (11-for-14) at the charity stripe.
Junior Megan Fox grabbed eight rebounds for the Violets, while junior Chelsea Seabron finished with six points and six boards.
NYU returns to action Sunday, Feb. 24, when it travels to St. Louis to face Washington University at 2 p.m. (Central Standard Time).
