02/08/08
Although junior forward Jessica McEntee hit a career-best four three-pointers en route to a game-high 21 points, the New York University women's basketball team suffered a 73-63 setback against Case Western Reserve University in University Athletic Association (UAA) action Friday night at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
The Violets (13-6, 2-6 UAA) led by as many as 13 with 15:01 remaining, but the Spartans (11-8, 4-4 UAA) reeled off the final 11 points to earn a sweep of the season series. NYU is still 28-3 all-time against Case Western Reserve.
NYU clung to a seemingly comfortable 48-33 edge after junior forward Sarah McDevitt converted a lay-up with 15:01 remaining. The Violets played smart basketball early, notching assists on 16 of their first 18 shots, and on 18 of 23 overall.
However, the Spartans shot lights out (57.4%, 27-for-47) and steadily rallied back into the game until going ahead for good when Ashely Horton (14 points, 7-for-7 FG, 6 rebounds) grabbed an offensive rebound and banked home the miss to make it 64-63 with 2:34 remaining.
Overall, the Case Western Reserve owned a 36-25 edge on the glass and a 40-24 advantage on points in the paint. Ashleigh Tondo finished with 19 points, nine assists and seven rebounds for the Spartans, while Mary Herendeen contributed four of her 15 points during the final 2:00.
In the first half, the Violets turned 13 Case Western Reserve turnovers into 18 points in seizing a 34-29 halftime cushion. During an 11-1 surge, the trio of sophomore Jen Hum-Traverso, McEntee and McDevitt each drilled three-balls, as NYU went 6-for-9 (66.7%) from downtown in the opening 20 minutes. McEntee led all players with 10 first-half tallies.
Junior guard Gena Brown finished with 10 points and sophomore forward Grace Carmen added eight for NYU, which shot 39.7% (23-for-58), including 50.0% (8-for-16) from long range. McEntee grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and just missed her 13th double-double of the season.
NYU returns to action Sunday, Feb. 10, when it hosts UAA foe Emory University at 2 p.m. The Violets will be looking to avenge an 80-60 loss to the Eagles in Atlanta on Feb. 1.
