02/03/08

Junior forward Jessica McEntee posted her 12th double-double of the season with 25 points and 11 rebounds, but nationally ranked New York University suffered a 70-58 loss at Case Western Western Reserve University in University Athletic Association (UAA) women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.

Ranked #21 by D3hoops.com and #23 in the USA Today ESPN Division III Coaches' Rankings, the Violets (13-5, 2-5 UAA) suffered just their second loss in 30 meetings with the Spartans (10-8, 3-4 UAA).

Although NYU led 35-29 at the break, its lead proved short-lived coming out of the break. After McEntee converted a three-point play to give the Violets a 43-42 edge with 14:11 remaining, the Spartans reeled off 22 of the next 27 points to take a commanding 60-48 lead with 6:49 remaining after a three-ball by Caitlin Henry (14 points, 6 rebounds).

Ultimately, Case Western Reserve took control of the contest by owning a 54-40 edge on the glass, including 21 offensive boards, and claiming a 25-12 advantage on second-chance points.

Ashleigh Tondo led the Spartans with 18 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and three steals, while Mary Herendeen added 16.

For NYU, freshman Bianca Storts ahd nine points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Fellow rookie Cindy Gould produced career highs of eight points and four boards.

Case Western Reserve shot 36.4% (24-for-66) from the floor, and 26.9% (7-for-26) from long distance. NYU shot 31.7% (20-for-63), including just 15.8% (3-for-19) from three-point range.

The Violets return to action Friday, Feb. 8, for a home rematch with Case Western Reserve at 6 p.m. The game at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center will be a "Tear It Up!" event with free food and t-shirts provided to the NYU student body.
