#21/23 Women's Hoops Toppled at Emory, 80-60
02/01/08
Despite getting a game-high 25 points from junior forward and reigning University Athletic Association (UAA) Player of the Year Jessica McEntee, New York University dropped a 80-60 decision to Emory University in UAA women's basketball action Friday night at the Woodruff P.E. Center in Atlanta.
McEntee also grabbed seven rebounds and blocked a career-high four shots. The only other NYU player to reach double digits was freshman guard Chelsea Blake, who netted 11.
Erica Kaplan finished with 18 points, including four three-pointers, to go with five rebounds and four assists to lead four Eagles in double figures. LeShonda Lillard (13 points, 6 assists), Kristen Brown (10 points, 5 rebounds) and Lora Turner (10 points, 8 rebounds) also contributed as the Eagles shot 62.1% (18-for-29) in the second half and hit 50.0% (12-for-24) of their three-point tries.
Ranked #21 by D3hoops.com and #23 in the USA Today ESPN Division III Coaches' Poll, the Violets (13-4, 2-4 UAA) led by 10 at the onset, but endured a 45-18 spurt spanning both halves by the Eagles (9-8, 2-4 UAA) in suffering their third straight setback.
The first 10 minutes had all the makings of a breakthrough performance for the Violets. McEntee tallied seven of her points during a 12-0 surge that gave NYU a 15-5 lead 10:49 before the break. Conversely, Emory missed 13 straight shots and started off just 2-for-16 (12.5%) from the floor.
However, Emory flipped the script, closing the first half with a 21-9 surge featuring five three-balls -- including two apiece from Kaplan and Jenny Kraus. Despite hitting just 27.8% (10-for-36) of their shot attempts over the first 20 minutes, the Eagles went 7-for-15 (46.7%) from long distance to take a 29-27 edge into halftime.
Emory continued its proficiency from downtown to start the second half, canning four long balls during a 24-9 outburst that gave the home team a 53-36 lead with 13:55 remaining, forcing the Violets to burn a timeout. Seven different Eagles scored during the surge, with Lillard's seven leading the way.
NYU eventually pulled within 57-48 with 8:39 remaining on a McEntee put-back, but went the next 4:56 without a point. Meanwhile, Kate Corkle responded on the next possession with an old-fashioned three-point play to put the Eagles up 60-48, and the Violets never climbed within single digits again.
For the game, the Violets shot just 39.7% (25-for-63), including 25.0% (5-for-20) from beyond the arc.
NYU ends its road trip Sunday, Feb. 3, with a 2 p.m. tip-off at UAA adversary Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
