McEntee Reaches Millennium Mark as #8/9 Women's Basketball Bows to Chicago

01/27/08

Junior forward Jessica McEntee became the 13th New York University women's basketball player to score 1,000 points, but the Violets could not silence the University of Chicago's second-half surge in a 72-68 setback in University Athletic Association (UAA) action Sunday afternoon before 1,415 at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

Known for her excellence at the charity stripe and in the low post, McEntee became the first Violet to reach the millennium mark since Lauren D'Ambrosio (1,201 points, 1999-2004) by canning a three-pointer with 12:18 remaining in the first half to give NYU (13-3, 2-3 UAA) a 15-12 lead. The 2007 All-American and reigning UAA Player of the Year finished with 25 points and 14 rebounds for ninth double-double of the season for the Violets (#8 D3hoops.com, #9 USA Today ESPN).

Molly Hackney, the 2007 UAA Rookie of the Year, netted 12 of her 16 points in the second half as the Maroons (12-4, 3-2 UAA), including six during a 15-5 burst that gave the victors a 61-51 lead with 5:47 remaining.

NYU steadily chipped away thanks to inspired play from McEntee down the stretch. The junior scored seven of her points, including four free throws en route to a 13-for-16 performance from the line, to pull the Violets within 69-68 with 10.1 ticks remaining.

Alex Leach (12 points) calmly canned two tries from the charity stripe to stake Chicago to a 71-68 lead with 9.2 seconds left, setting up a final attempt for NYU to tie the game. However, McEntee missed a lay-up attempt while trying to draw contact.

Jamie Stinson (4 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists) hit 1-of-2 free throws with :0.4 seconds left to ice the game for Chicago, who owned a 42-26 edge on points in the paint.

Freshman guard Chelsea Blake finished with 14 points in her first collegiate start for the Violets, while sophomore Jen Hum-Traverso tied her career high with 13 tallies.

Nofi Mojidi contributed 14 points and four steals for the Maroons. Karly Kasper snared a team-high seven boards off the bench to help Chicago claim a 41-38 advantage on the glass.

Chciago shot 41.3% (26-for-63), including 46.7% (14-for-30) after the break, and hit 65.4% (17-for-26) of its free-throw attempts.

Conversely, NYU shot just 25.0% (7-for-28) in the second half and 38.9% (21-for-54) overall. The Violets hit 74.1% (20-for-27) of their free throws.

NYU returns to action Friday, Feb. 2, for a 6 p.m. tip-off at UAA rival Emory University in Atlanta.
