#3/4 Women's Basketball Bows On Road to #12/21 Rochester, 62-55
01/18/08
Despite getting another double-double from junior forward Jessica McEntee, the New York University women's basketball team suffered its first setback of the 2007-08 season, falling 62-55 to the University of Rochester in a battle of nationally ranked University Athletic Association (UAA) rivals Friday night at The Palestra in Rochester, NY.
McEntee finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season, but was the only player to reach double digits for the Violets (12-1, 1-1 UAA), ranked #3 by D3hoops.com and #4 in the USA Today ESPN Division III poll.
Meanwhile, the Yellowjackets (12-1, 2-0 UAA), ranked #12 in the USA Today ESPN poll and #21 by D3hoops.com, put three players in double digits: Julie Marriott (17 points), Alex Porter (14 points, 6 rebounds) and Helen Baroody (13 points).
For about the first 33 minutes, both teams put on a point-counterpoint production in yet another back-and-forth battle between these UAA rivals. However, the Yellowjackets ultimately seized control courtesy of a 6-0 run after NYU went ahead 49-48 on a bucket by junior guard Gena Brown (8 points). Marriott scored all six points during the outburst to stake Rochester to a 54-49 lead with 4:39 remaining.
The Violets managed just six points after Brown's basket -- four from McEntee and two from freshman guard Chelsea Blake (9 points) -- but did not score in the final 134 seconds despite pulling with 56-55 after Blake converted a lay-up off a steal with 2:14 remaining.
NYU took a 31-27 lead into the locker room at the break despite committing 14 first-half turnovers. McEntee had 11 points and eight rebounds over the first 20 minutes.
Rochester shot 36.2% (25-for-69) from the floor and 16.7% (2-for-12) from three-point range. The Yellowjackets took 16 more shots than NYU, which shot 35.8% (19-for-53) and 23.1% (3-for-13) from long range.
NYU owned a 45-36 rebounding edge, but committed 22 turnovers to just 10 by Rochester.
NYU resumes action Sunday, Jan. 20, when it travels to Pittsburgh to oppose UAA opponent Carnegie Mellon University at 2 p.m. The women's game will be preceded by the Violets' men's game against the Tartans at noon.
