#4 Women's Hoops Caps Non-League Slate by Stifling Hunter, 54-36

01/14/08

Junior forward Jessica McEntee tallied 17 points and freshman guard Bianca Storts tied her career high with 15 tallies, as the New York University women's basketball team rode a stout defensive effort to a 54-36 victory over Hunter College on Monday evening at the Hunter Sportsplex in New York.

Ranked #4 in the USA Today/ESPN and D3hoops.com polls, NYU (12-0) harassed Hunter (2-12) into 35.0% (14-for-40) shooting and 28 turnovers. It was an opponent's lowest output against the Violets since a 75-33 triumph over College of Mount St. Vincent on Jan. 2, 2007, and extended NYU's streak of holding opponents below 50 points to four games. The Violets have kept seven foes overall below the 50-point barrier season.

McEntee finished with eight rebounds and four steals for the Violets, while junior Megan Fox contributed four points, seven rebounds and a career-best four swipes. Storts added three steals in the win.

NYU finished the non-University Athletic Association (UAA) portion of its schedule 11-0 for the third consecutive season, stretching its non-conference victory run to 36 games.

Thus far, the Violets have won 11 of their first 12 games by 10 points or more.

Essentially, NYU used two big runs, one in each half, to seize control despite slogging through a performance where it shot just 35.4% (17-for-48) and turned the ball over 24 times.

In the first half, five different Violets scored during a 12-0 surge that gave them a 15-4 bulge 10:41 before the halftime break. Neither team found any consistency offensively, though, as NYU entered intermission ahead 27-15.

To start the second stanza, McEntee and Storts scored four points apiece as the Violets rendered the Hawks scoreless for the first 7:21 of the half en route to securing a 35-15 advantage.

Shay Branch-El-Vielot contributed a team-best 15 points, while Andrea Buckham produced 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals for Hunter.

NYU returns to action Friday, Jan. 18, when it travels to UAA rival the University of Rochester (#14 USA Today/ESPN, #22 D3hoops.com) for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
