#4 Women's Basketball Jolts Johns Hopkins, 63-45, Improves to 9-0
01/04/08
Junior forward Jessica McEntee tallied a game-high 22 points, helping the New York University women's basketball team toppled Johns Hopkins University 63-45 on Friday night at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
Ranked #4 in both the USA Today/ESPN and D3hoops.com polls, the Violets (9-0) overcame a sluggish offensive performance to extend their regular-season non-conference win streak to 34 games.
Lyndsay Burton led Johns Hopkins with 12 points and added five rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench, while Andrea Dodrill finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
Although NYU left the court at halftime ahead 25-16, the first 20 minutes were more a matter of offensive survival for both squads: the Violets shot just 25.0% (7-for-28), while the Blue Jays converted just 24.1% (7-for-29) of their attempts. NYU scored the game's first seven points, including six from McEntee, while Johns Hopkins missed its first 12 shots before Burton converted an old-fashioned three-point play at 13:16.
After the Blue Jays pulled within 28-25 to start the second half, the Violets rode a 17-4 spurt to a 45-29 lead with 9:04 remaining. McEntee scored six points during the surge, while junior guard/forward Sarah McDevitt (9 points) added five and junior center Megan Fox (8 points, 3 steals) contributed a pair of buckets.
Even so, neither team found much of an offensive flow. NYU shot just 35.1% (20-for-57) from the field and 67.9% (19-for-28) at the charity stripe, while Johns Hopkins hit just 28.6% (18-for-63) of its shots and converted 75.0% (6-for-8) of its free throws.
NYU owned a 45-41 edge on the glass, with McEntee grabbing a team-high seven boards.
Freshman guard Bianca Storts netted eight points in her first collegiate start for the Violets.
NYU returns to action Monday, Jan. 7, when it hosts non-conference opponent New Jersey City University at 7 p.m. at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center.
