#5/6 Women's Basketball Downs Drew as McEntee Sets Another Mark
12/08/07
Junior forward Jessica McEntee tallied 31 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, went 13-for-13 from the charity stripe and set another school record as the New York University women's basketball team defeated Drew, 86-70, on Saturday afternoon in Madison, NJ.
McEntee finished the game having hit 27 consecutive free throws, breaking the previous NYU mark of 24 she set last season between Feb. 2-9. The junior All-American and reigning University Athletic Association (UAA) Player of the Year went 9-for-12 from the field, and helped the Violets (7-0) hit 95.7% (22-for-23) of their free throws.
Ranked #5 in the USA Today/ESPN Division III Poll and #6 by D3hoops.com, NYU (7-0) jumped out to a 19-2 lead just 5:29 into the contest. McEntee scored six of her points during that opening surge, as the Violets shot 62.1% (18-for-29) in the opening 20 minutes to take a 43-31 lead into the break.
"I thought we did a pretty good job of pushing the ball, pushing the tempo and getting high-percentage shots," NYU head coach Janice Quinn said.
McEntee went 9-for-9 from the foul line in the second half, as the Violets maintained control of the contest. The junior also added four assists and three steals for good measure.
"Jen Hum-Traverso and Chelsea Blake both did a good job of getting Jess the ball," Quinn said. "All of our guards -- Jen, Chelsea, Sarah McDevitt and Chelsea Trout -- did a good job of getting her the ball. That's not that easy when people know where the ball's going."
Even so, the Violets got steady contributions from several players en route to shooting 53.4% (31-for-58). Trout was the only other NYU player in double digits, tallying 10 points. However, major contributions also came from the likes of freshman forward Bianca Storts (9 points), sophomore forward Grace Carmen (8 points in 13 minutes), Blake (6 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds), and junior center Megan Fox (4 points, 7 rebounds).
Allison Hartnett and Laura Methvin each netted 16 points for Drew (2-4). Emma Grossman (13 points) and Ashley Logan (11) also hit double figures for the Rangers, which shot just 37.7% (26-for-69).
"I thought our kids showed a lot of character and a lot of discipline," Quinn said.
NYU will take the next 21 days off for exams before resuming action Sunday, Dec. 30, with a 6 p.m. home game against Stevens Institute of Technology.
