11/24/07

Junior forward Sarah McDevitt came off the bench and tallied a game-high 17 points as the New York University women's basketball team produced an 84-40 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham in the first round of the NYU Classic on Saturday at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

McDevitt went 5-for-7 from beyond the three-point arc for the Violets (3-0; #4 ESPN/USA Today, #8 D3Hoops.com), who canned 11 treys and saw 12 different players score. Freshman guard Chelsea Blake went 5-for-5 from the field and recorded career highs of 11 points and five assists in 17 minutes.

Emily Cerankowski poured in 14 points for the Devils (2-2), while Danielle Michlovsky finished with 10 points and eight boards in the loss.

NYU dominated from the opening tap, taking its first double-digit lead at 15-5 with 12:03 remaining after a McDevitt trey. The Violets claimed their largest first-half lead right before the break, going up 51-23 at the break. McDevitt tallied a half-high 11 points, including three trifectas, as 10 different Violets scored in the first 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, the Violets owned a 48-28 edge on the glass and held FDU-Florham to 28.0% shooting (14 of 50), including just 13.8% (4 of 29) in the second half. Junior forward Jessica McEntee (5 points, 12 rebounds), and junior centers Megan Fox (4 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 blocks) and Chelsea Seabron (4 points, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 steals), keyed the Violets' stout defensive effort.

"We were very happy to take advantage of our depth," NYU head coach Janice Quinn said. "Megan Fox, 'B' (Bianca Storts) and Jess did a good job of controlling our inside defense. Jen and Blake did a great job of running."

NYU returns to action Sunday, Nov. 25, when it faces Worcester State College in the second day of the NYU Classic at 3 pm. FDU-Florham will face Wesley College at 1 pm.

Wesley defeated Worcester State, 63-54, in the other first-round game. Latasha Torres tallied 21 points to lead Wesley (1-2), which overcame a 23-12 halftime deficit.

Lindsay DelleChiaie had 16 points and Alexis George finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Lancers (0-4).
