11/17/07

Junior forward Jessica McEntee scored 10 straight points during a game-deciding spurt and finished with 24 points and 16 rebounds as the New York University women's basketball team captured the 2007 NYU Tip-Off Tournament with a hard-fought 71-61 victory over Farmingdale State College on Saturday night at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

McEntee earned Tournament Most Valuable Player honors for the Violets (2-0), who are ranked #4 in the ESPN/USA Today Poll and #8 by D3Hoops.com. Senior guard Chelsea Trout poured in 14 points and also earned All-Tournament honors, as did junior guard Gena Brown (six points, career-high 10 rebounds).

Kimberly Blakney led the Rams (1-1) with 22 points and also garnered a spot on the All-Tournament team. Dankery Perez finished with 15 points and eight assists.

NYU trailed 54-46 with 11:53 remaining, forcing head coach Janice Quinn to call a full timeout.

A few minutes later, McEntee began to flash the form that made her an All-American last season. She scored 10 consecutive points, including a 12-foot jumper with 4:01 remaining that gave the Violets a 58-57 lead. It was the first time NYU led since going ahead 22-21 with 10:23 remaining in the first half after a McEntee lay-up.

By the time NYU was finished, it held a 69-57 lead with 1:38 remaining after McEntee hit another short jumper with the shot clock about to expire.

McEntee's performance flipped the script from the first half, when Farmingdale State's defense stifled NYU's shooters over the final 10 minutes of the half, holding NYU to 5-25 shooting during that stretch and 13-35 overall (37.1%) to take a 39-36 lead into intermission. Blakney scored six of her 15 first-half points during an 8-0 run as the Rams turned a 22-21 deficit into a 29-22 lead with 8:05 left in the opening stanza.

For NYU, junior center Megan Fox contributed nine points and five rebounds, while freshman guard Chelsea Blake tallied a career-high seven points.

Jasmine Sistrunk had seven points and nine boards for Farmingdale State.

NYU owned a 55-31 edge on the glass and shot 38.3% (23-60), while the Rams hit 35.4% (23-65) of their shots.
