11/16/07

Junior All-American Jessica McEntee recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while leading a stout defensive effort as the New York University women's basketball team opened its season with a 61-40 victory over Trinity College (CT) in the first round of the NYU Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

Senior guard Chelsea Trout added 13 points for the Violets, ranked #4 in the ESPN/USA Today Poll and #8 by D3Hoops.com. NYU held Trinity to 21.2% (14-66) shooting and prevailed despite committing 29 turnovers.

NYU will now play Farmingdale State College, an 85-61 winner over Cazenovia College, for the championship on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 8 p.m. Trinity will play Cazenovia in the third-place game at 6 p.m.

NYU used its quickness and tenacity to establish a strong defensive tone early, even when its shots were not falling. Although the Violets found the iron unkind in the opening minutes, they jumped out to an 8-0 lead while forcing the Bantams to commit seven turnovers and miss their first nine shots before Kristen Liska canned a pull-up jumper in the paint at 13:44.

However, NYU led by as many as 20 in the first half, holding Trinity below 10 percent shooting for most of the first stanza. Eventually, the Violets took a 32-15 lead into the locker room thanks to the play of McEntee (10 first-half points). The Bantams shot just 20.0 percent (6-30) and commmitted 16 turnovers thanks to the stellar perimeter defense from junior guard Gena Brown, who scored all nine of her points in the first half and added six rebounds.

The Violets stretched their lead to as many as 27 in the second half thanks to inspired debuts from freshmen Chelsea Blake (6 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals) and Bianca Storts (5 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists), as well as junior Chelsea Seabron (6 points, 4 rebounds).

NYU shot 40.0% from the field (22-55), including 36.4% from long range (8-22), and owned a 47-42 edge on the glass.

Claire Arnstein led the Bantams with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Kristen Liska was the Bantams' second-highest scorer, netting six points and grabbing five caroms.
