Men's Basketball Clipped by Carnegie Mellon, 68-60

New York University found itself on the wrong end of a 13-4 game-ending run and saw its four-game win streak snapped with a 68-60 loss to Carnegie Mellon University in University Athletic Association (UAA) men's basketball action before 2,068 at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center.

NYU (14-7, 5-5 UAA) led by as many as 11 in the second half, and reclaimed the lead, 56-55, on a jumper by freshman forward Richie Polan (game-high 19 points) with 6:20 remaining.

However, Carnegie Mellon (14-7, 4-6 UAA) went ahead 57-56 just 15 seconds later on a putback by Terrance Bouldin-Johnson (12 points, 5 rebounds, career-high 4 blocks, 3 steals). Jack Anderson netted five of his 15 points during the Tartans' game-ending burst, including a three-pointer with 1:35 remaining to put his team up 64-58.

Overall, Carnegie Mellon outscored NYU in points off turnovers (19-4) and on second-chance points (13-3). Greg Gonzalez recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Tartans' cause down low.

After Gonzalez nailed a pair of free throws following an NYU technical foul to make it 25-all, junior center John Mish (16 points, 4 assists) scored seven points during a half-ending 9-0 surge to help the Violets take a 34-25 lead into the locker room. Polan led all scorers with 12 points during the opening stanza. NYU shot 56.5% (13-for-23) from the field in the first half while outscoring the Tartans 18-8 in the paint.

NYU shot 45.8% (22-for-48) from the floor, but just 25.0% (4-for-16) from long distance. Conversely, Carnegie Mellon hit 42.3% (22-for-52) of its shots, including 52.0% (13-for-25) in the second half as the Violets struggled (36.0%, 9-for-25).

NYU returns to action Sunday, Feb. 17, when it hosts the University of Rochester at noon. Prior to the game, the Violets will honor their two seniors: Parker and center Michael Magee.
