Men's Basketball Toppled by #4 Washington, 57-50, Before 2,308 at Coles
01/25/08
Although freshmen Richie Polan and D.J. Glavan reached double digits, the New York University men's basketball team's upset bid against University Athletic Association (UAA) rival and #4-ranked Washington University fell short in a 57-50 setback before 2,308 fans at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center.
Polan finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Glavan added 11 off the bench for the Violets (10-5, 1-3 UAA), who faced their fourth ranked opponent in five games, going 1-3 during that stretch.
Troy Ruths, the reigning UAA Player of the Year, finished with 17 points and seven rebounds for Washington (13-2, 4-0 UAA), which won its 11th straight and remained atop the UAA standings.
Washington used stifling defense to set up its offense during a 17-5 surge to take a 51-35 lead with 6:47 remaining. Danny O'Boyle five of his 15 points during the run, as the Bears limited NYU to 32.0% (8-for-25) shooting in the second half and 37.8% (17-for-45) overall.
The Violets also committed 16 turnovers.
"I thought we played really hard tonight," NYU head coach Joe Nesci said. "We just committed too many turnovers and we just didn't shoot the ball well. Hey, they're the #4 team in the country."
NYU started strong, scoring the first eight points to draw a roar from the capacity crowd. But the Bears awakened from their early hole by getting a lot of good looks against the 12th-ranked scoring defense in Division III en route to shooting 54.2% (13-for-24) in the first 20 minutes.
Trailing 14-13, Washington reeled off 18 of the next 25 points to claim a 31-21 lead 2:01 before intermission. Danny O'Boyle canned a pair of three-balls during the surge for the Bears.
However, a free throw from junior center John Mish and a trey from senior pivot Michael Magee whittled the deficit to 31-25 at the break.
Senior guard Charlie Parker finished with nine points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists in the loss for NYU.
NYU returns to action Sunday, Jan. 27, when it hosts UAA rival the University of Chicago at noon. The Violets lead the all-time series 21-20, including a split in 2007 as both teams claimed a win on their respective homecourts.
