01/18/08
Jon Onyiriuka finished with game highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds as the University of Rochester, ranked #1 by D3hoops.com, dealt New York University a 70-54 defeat on Friday night at The Palestra in Rochester, NY.
Senior guard Charlie Parker led three Violets (9-4, 0-2 UAA) in double digits with 12 points. Sophomores Keith Jensen and Omar Meziab each tallied 11 for NYU, which faced its second top-two team in three games. The Violets dropped a 66-56 decision to #2 Brandeis University on Jan. 12 at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
Rochester (13-0, 2-0 UAA) claimed control midway through the first half, balancing offensive patience and defensive grit. Onyiriuka sparked a 13-0 surge, as the Yellowjackets snapped a 17-17 deadlock while rendering the Violets scoreless for a stretch of 8:47.
NYU's drought finally ceased when Polan hit a driving lay-up 3:23 before the break.
However, Rochester maintained its scoring touch as Dominiak canned the last of his three first-half treys right before the halftime horn, helping the Yellowjackets take a 40-23 lead into the locker room. Robert Dominiak led all scorers with 13 first-half points, finishing with 16 overall, as Rochester shot 59.3% (16-for-27) from the floor over the first 20 minutes.
NYU pulled within 57-49 with 8:43 remaining courtesy of a triple from the hands of Meziab, and could have dissolved the lead further but missed a shot on its next possession. Onyiriuka proceeded to score on each of Rochester's next two possessions to make it 61-749 with 6:26 to go, as the Violets never got within single digits again.
Overall, the Violets shot 40.8% (20-for-49) from the field, inclouding 41.2% (7-for-17) from long range, and were outrebounded 34-27. NYU committed just 10 turnovers, but forced just four Yellowjacket miscues.
Rochester shot 45.5% (25-for-55) from the floor, but just 31.8% (7-for-22) on its long-range attempts.
NYU returns to action Sunday, Jan. 20, when it travels to Pittsburgh to face #24 Carnegie Mellon University at noon. That game will open a UAA doubleheader that will co-feature the NYU women against the Tartans at 2 p.m.
