Men's Basketball Rides Hot Second Half Past Hunter, 82-73
01/14/08
Senior guard Charlie Parker produced a career and game-high 22 points and sparked a 58-point second-half surge that helped the New York University men's basketball team dealt Hunter College an 82-73 defeat Monday night at the Hunter Sportsplex in New York.
Parker finished 6-for-12 from the floor, 3-for-6 from beyond the three-point arc and a perfect 7-for-7 at the charity stripe in tying his previous high of 22 points set Nov. 26 against York College (NY).
"Charlie just did a really good job," NYU head coach Joe Nesci said of Parker, who also doled out four assists. He was real steady. Defensively, Charlie did a good job on their point guard, who was a Division I transfer. He just had a really good all-around game."
Sophomore forward Keith Jensen netted all 14 of his points in the final 20 minutes, while freshman forward Richie Polan contributed 13 points and nine rebounds as the Violets (9-3) concluded their non-University Athletic Association (UAA) schedule with a 9-2 mark.
NYU, which produced a season high in points scored, has won eight of its last nine games, with the lone loss being a 66-56 setback against Brandeis University, ranked #2 in the D3hoops.com poll, last Saturday.
After a sluggish first half in which they shot 33.3% (8-for-24), including just 27.3% (3-for-11) from beyond the arc, Parker helped ignite a dormant Violet attack. He canned a pair of threes during a 15-3 outburst, as NYU turned a 28-24 deficit into a 37-31 lead with 16:16 remaining.
From there, the Violets found a fine rhythm offensively, with Parker and teammates such as Jensen and freshman guard D.J. Glavan (6 points) scoring off dribble drives, fast-break opportunities and long-range shots alike.
Over the final 20 minutes, NYU shot 69.0% (20-for-30) from the floor and finished shooting 52.8% (28-for-53) overall.
"In the first half, we definitely did not do a good job of sharing the ball and getting good shots," Nesci said. "We had a sense of urgency early in the second half defensively. Once we got the lead, we started executing better and hitting more of our shots.
For the second straight game and fourth time this season, the Violets knocked down 10 three-balls, shooting 43.5% (10-for-23) from beyond the arc.
Marlon Smith hit for 21 points and Joseph DeLuca added 20 in the loss for Hunter, which shot 42.9% (24-for-56) from the floor, including 36.4% (12-for-33) from beyond the arc.
NYU returns to action Friday, Jan. 18, when it travels to face UAA rival and #1-ranked University of Rochester at 8 p.m.
