Men's Basketball's Balanced Attack Overcomes Clarkson, 65-44

Freshman forward Richie Polan paced a balanced attack with 11 points, leading the New York University men's basketball team to its seventh straight victory, 65-44, over Clarkson University on Monday night at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center.

Polan also snared eight rebounds, and established career highs in assists (4) and blocks (4) as the Violets (8-2) used a 17-4 closing spurt to stave off the Golden Knights (2-8) in their final game before beginning their University Athletic Association schedule Saturday against #2-ranked Brandeis University.

Brandon Linton led Clarkson with 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

After the Golden Knights pulled within 48-41 with on a lay-up by Brandon Rigg-Reives with 4:36 remaining, NYU got three-pointers from sophomore forward Zachary Kuba (9 points) and Polan on consecutive possessions to claim a 54-41 advantage with 3:08 remaining.

From there, freshman guard D.J. Glavan (8 points) scored six straight points to stake the Violets to a 60-44 lead with 1:31 remaining.

"I thought that we really got very good production across the board, especially in the second half when they made a push at us," NYU head coach Joe Nesci said. "We got really good play from D.J. off the bench, and Richie came back in late and was really in rhythm."

NYU, which led 26-24 at the break, shot 47.8% (22-for-46), including 36.4% (8-for-22) from downtown, while hitting 72.2% (13-for-18) of its tries at the charity stripe.

Despite getting outrebounded 33-28, the Violets scored 22 points off 17 Clarkson turnovers in holding their their eighth opponent to 60 points or less. NYU is ranked eighth in Division III in scoring defense.

Ryan Smith (7 rebounds), Elson Pickering (5 rebounds) and Jonathan Hood each tallied six points for Clarkson, which shot 39.1% (18-for-46) from the floor, including 30.0% (3-for-10) from long range, and just 41.7% (5-for-12) at the foul line.

Senior center Michael Magee finished with seven points, five rebounds, four assists and four blocks for NYU.

NYU takes the court again Saturday, Jan. 12, when it hosts Brandeis at 4 p.m. at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center. The game will be part of a UAA doubleheader, with the Violets' women's team to face the Judges' women at 2 p.m.
