Men's Basketball Beats Buffalo State for Sixth Straight Victory
01/05/08
Sparked by a career-high 15 points from freshman forward Richie Polan, the New York University men's basketball continued its winning ways with a 70-62 victory over Buffalo State College on Saturday evening at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center.
Polan hit five of his six shots, including a career-high tying four three-pointers, as the Violets (7-2) rode several solid individual contributions to its sixth straight victory.
Sophomore guard Omar Meziab tallied 12 points for NYU and went 7-for-7 at the charity stripe, including conversions on all four of his tries in the final minute, while adding three steals. Sophomore forward Zachary Kuba netted 10 points for the Violets.
Anderson White led the Bengals (3-3) with 15 points, while Antonio Samedi contributed 14 points and three steals.
Polan's three-point shooting helped NYU snap out of an early 16-9 hole, as he scored nine of his points in the opening half. NYU entered the locker room with a 35-30 lead despite shooting just 39.4% (13-for-33) across the first 20 minutes thanks to the play of junior center John Mish. Mish produced five consecutive points during a half-closing 8-2 surge.
Overall, Mish posted career highs of eight points, three assists and 15 minutes played. He also grabbed five rebounds and helped the Violets hold the Bengals 24.2 points below their 86.2 point-per-game averaging entering the contest.
Still, NYU needed to stave off a late Buffalo State charge. The Violets took a 58-45 lead with 6:06 remaining after Kuba went 1-for-2 at the charity stripe.
The Bengals made things interesting, pulling within four points twice in the waning moments and forcing NYU to make some clutch free throws. In the final :36, Meziab canned all four of his attempts and sophomore forward Keith Jensen (5 points, career-high 5 assists, 4 rebounds) buried a pair.
Also for the Violets, senior center Michael Magee produced nine points (4-for-5 shooting) and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Charlie Parker added eight points for NYU, which shot 44.2% (23-for-52), including 36.0% (9-for-25) from long range, and 83.3% (15-for-18) from the charity stripe.
Jamar Gray had nine points for Buffalo State, while Dion Mozelle contributed eight points and seven rebounds. The Bengals shot 48.0% (24-for-50) from the floor, including 42.9% (3-for-7) from long range, and 73.3% (11-for-15) at the foul line.
NYU returns to action Tuesday, Jan. 7, when it hosts Clarkson University at 7 p.m. at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center for its third game in five days.
