Men's Basketball Downs Drew to Capture NYU Holiday Tournament
12/30/07
Senior guard and tournament Most Valuable Player Charlie Parker canned six three-pointers and scored a game-high 18 points, leading the New York University men's basketball team to a 73-47 victory over Drew University in the championship game of the NYU Holiday Tournament on Sunday at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
NYU (5-2) shot a blistering 61.9% (13-for-21) from long distance, including Parker's career-high tying six trifectas, en route to winning its fourth straight contest. Sophomore forward and All-Tournament Team member Keith Jensen hit for 17 points, including three treys, while also grabbing seven rebounds for the Violets.
Gerard Mullin, an All-Tournament Team pick, led the Rangers (4-4) with 13 points and added three steals. David Cramer finished with 10 points for Drew.
However, it was Parker who set the tone for NYU on its first two trips down the court. The senior guard canned a three-pointer 20 seconds into the action off a feed from Jensen. After a Drew miss, the Violets charged back down the floor and Parker spotted up again from long range, calmly swishing a long jumper off a pass from senior center and All-Tournament Team honoree Michael Magee (9 points, 8 rebounds).
Just 61 seconds in, the Violets claimed a 6-0 lead and Drew would never get any closer.
"You never know if that's going to set the tempo, but it did today," NYU head coach Joe Nesci said. "We had a real good shooting game. Offensively, it was clearly our best shooting performance. We did a nice job offensively throughout."
NYU shot a season-best 50.9% (27-for-53) from the floor and owned a 27-22 edge on the glass.
Although Drew hit 47.2% (17-for-36) of its shots, including 50.0% (7-for-14) from behind the arc, the Rangers became the fifth Violet opponents held below 60 points this season. Not coincidentally, NYU won on each of those occasions.
NYU returns to action Thursday, Jan. 3, when it hosts Medaille College for a non-conference contest at 7 p.m. at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center.
