Men's Basketball Overcome by Intra-City Rival York, 63-49

11/26/07

Freshman Richie Polan collected his first collegiate double-double, tallying 13 points and 11 rebounds, but the New York University men's basketball team dropped a 63-49 decision to intra-city rival York College on Monday night at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center.

Polan connected on four three-pointers, while senior center Michael Magee contributed 12 points and six rebounds for the Violets (1-2), who dropped their second straight game.

NYU struggled to contain York (3-3) star guard Michael Salamanca, who finished with game highs of 18 points and nine assists. Salamanca, the Cardinals' leading scorer in each of their first six games, also went 10-for-10 at the charity stripe. York notched assists on 17 of its 22 field goals.

Rodney Bennett came off the bench and finished with 15 points and eight rebounds for York.

NYU struggled offensively against the Cardinals' athleticism, starting the game 0-for-6 from the floor with six turnovers before sophomore guard Omar Meziab buried two free throws 7:25 into the contest to pull the Violets within 8-2. Freshman guard D.J. Glavan gave NYU its first field goal 8:30 into the action, draining a three-pointer to make it 10-5.

Although York scored the next six points, with Salamanca converting a drive and dishing off to Nahum Verna for another lay-up, the Violets used a 15-8 run to close within 24-20 at the break. Meziab scored a team-high six points in the opening stanza, while Glavan had five points and three assists in the first 20 minutes. Verna and Chris Roberts each netted six points in the first half for York.

The second half proved much the same for the Violets, as they managed just two field goals in the first 5:43 of the session. A pair of trifectas from Polan pulled NYU within 38-31 with 11:36 remaining, but York kept its lead in double digits down the stretch.

In addition to Polan, Glavan offered a glimpse of the Violets' future, finishing with career bests of nine points and five assists.

NYU shot 35.3% (18-for-51) from the floor, including 30.8% (8-for-26) from three-point range, and lost the battles of the free-throw line (18-5) and rebounding (34-31). York shot 43.2% (22-for-51) from the field.

NYU is off for the next 11 days, returning to the court on Saturday, Dec. 8, to face Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, NY, at 1 p.m.
