Men's Basketball Beaten at Buzzer by SUNY Geneseo 60-57
11/18/07
Scott Morton drained a 30-foot three-pointer at the buzzer to lift SUNY Geneseo to a 60-57 victory over New York University in the championship game of the 2007 NYU Men's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
Morton scored a game-high 28 points on 11-of-19 shooting for the Knights (2-0), earning Tournament Most Valuable Player honors, as his team overcame a 57-55 deficit in the final 1:35.
SUNY Geneseo's Jeff Howe tallied 10 points and was also tabbed to the All-Tournament Team.
Senior guard Charlie Parker, another All-Tournament Team selection, netted a career-high 22 points including six three-pointers for NYU (1-1). Sophomore forward Keith Jensen, also an All-Tournament Team pick, finished with a career-high 15 points in addition to five boards and four assists.
Morton's heroics capped an exciting, back-and-forth contest that feature four ties and six lead changes in the second half. NYU took a 57-55 lead with 1:35 remaining on a hook shot by senior center Michael Magee (10 points, six rebounds), but endured a missed shot and turnover on its next two possessions.
The Knights forged a 57-57 deadlock with 30 seconds remaining on a jumper in the key by Tarik Kitson (six points, 10 rebounds, four assists) off a feed from Morton.
NYU took a 7-0 lead at the outset, but SUNY Geneseo's defense ruined the Violets' offensive flow after a jumper by sophomore forward Zachary Kuba at 13:14. The Violets went the next 10:08 without a point as the Knights reeled off 13 straight points to take a 22-13 lead.
Parker started feeling it from downtown, though, canning three straight treys as the half wound down. A lay-up at the horn by freshman guard D.J. Glavan enabled NYU to head into the locker room tied at 24-all.
SUNY Geneseo shot 48.0% (24-of-50) from the floor and owned a 28-25 edge on the glass. NYU shot 48.9% (23-47), including 52.6% from beyond the arc (10-of-19), and hit 61.9% of its shots in the final 20 minutes.
In the NYU Tip-Off Tournament third-place game, Rensselaar Polytechnic Institute scored a 78-76 overtime victory over Framingham State College.
NYU returns to action Monday, Nov. 26, when it hosts York College (NY) at 7 p.m.
