Heading into her fifth season as the head coach of New York University’s women’s swimming program, Lauren Beam has produced unparalleled results during her time on the deck.

Through her first four seasons, the Violets have produced four Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships and a 38-2 record, including a perfect 11-0 ledger in 2007-08. That was the second time Beam led NYU to an unblemished dual-meet record.

Last season, Beam guided the Violets to a third-place performance at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships and helped freshman Chelsea Pfohl gain All-America honors after placing seventh in the 100-yard butterfly at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships. Meanwhile, Samantha Ashby won the 100-yard breaststroke title at the UAA Championships.

Out of the water, 17 of Beam’s student-athletes earned a place on the 2007-08 UAA Winter Sport All-Academic honor roll.

Since taking over in 2004-05, Beam has coached three All-Americans and has produced a NCAA qualifier in each of her first four seasons. Also, she has been named ECAC Coach of the Meet three times (2004, 2005, 2007), led the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year in 2004-05 and was part of the UAA Co-Coaching Staff of the Year in 2005-06.

Prior to taking the reins, Beam served as an assistant coach at NYU from 2001-02 through 2003-04. Previously, Beam was an assistant at the University of San Diego in 2000-01. She has also accumulated coaching experience in Master’s Swimming and U.S.S. Age Group.

A 1999 cum laude graduate of NYU’s Steinhardt School of Education, Culture and Human Development, Beam was a four-year member of the Violets’ swimming team. She earned Academic All-America honors twice and established various individual and relay records in her specialties of the breaststroke and individual medley. Beam also received the NYU Founder’s Day Award for Outstanding Athletic and Academic Achievement, and was named NYU Freshman Athlete of the Year in 1996.

Also an assistant manager at the Palladium Athletic Facility Natatorium, Beam earned a master’s degree in sports business administration in 2006 from NYU’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies

A native of Albany, OR, Beam and her husband Mike reside in Manhattan.
