On Sunday, May 7, 2006, four former
student-athletes were honored at the New York University Athletics
Hall of Fame inductions & Student Athlete Alumni reception. NYU
recognized the great accomplishments of Jen Krolikowski (women's basketball, class of 1997), Richard Maiocco (men's track & field, class of 1952), Mike Muzio (men's baseball & basketball, coach and administrator, class of 1958), and Robert Schwarz (men's volleyball, class of 2000) with induction into the famed Hall. Members of the 1997 women's basketball team were also honored at the event, as we celebrated the 10-year anniversary of their historic NCAA Championship.
Jennifer Krolikowski will forever be remembered as one of the heroes of the Violets’ 1997 NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball National Championship Team. She scored the game-tying basket with 26 seconds left against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire that propelled NYU to its first national title in women’s basketball. Krolikowski earned Kodak First Team All-America honors in 1997, one of only six Violet players to ever earn the honor, and was a First Team All-University Athletic Association (UAA) in each of her final three seasons (1995, 1996, 1997). (more).
Richard Maiocco rated among the top runners nationally and internationally during his tenure at NYU, as he was ranked as high as #6 in the world by Track and Field News in 1951. He was named NYU’s Most Outstanding Graduating Athlete and also garnered a spot on the NCAA and AAU All-American Track and Field teams that year. During his career, Maiocco captured several titles, but one of his most noteworthy performances came when he placed third at the AAU National Championships. He was the first American finisher in that competition. Of his championship wins, the most noteworthy were when he won the Intercollegiate IC4A 440-yard Championships in 1951 and 1952. (more).
Mike Muzio was associated with NYU for 37 years (1954-1991) as a student-athlete, a coach, and an administrator. Among the most notable of his accomplishments was his leading the return of men’s basketball to NYU, coaching the Violets’ first NCAA Division III team in 1983-84. From 1983-89, Muzio went 95-43 (.642 winning percentage) and guided NYU to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 23 years in 1986. Muzio began his Violet athletic career as a two-sport athlete. A catcher and utility infielder for the baseball team from 1956-58, Muzio played on the 1956 College World Series Team. He also played guard for the men’s basketball team from 1955-58. Muzio graduated from NYU in 1958 with a B.S. in Recreation and Leisure Studies from the School of Education. (more).
Robert Schwarz entered NYU as one of the nation’s top men’s volleyball prospects, and certainly did not disappoint during his four seasons. He was named a two-time Volleyball Magazine Division III All-Star (1998, 2000), a four-time First Team Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) selection, earned a spot on the EIVA All-Freshman Team (1997), and was named MVP of the American Volleyball Coaches (AVCA)/Molton Division III National Championship Tournament (2000).
Schwarz set career records with kills (1,766, now second all-time) and kills per game (4.99). Schwarz established single-season standards for kills (549, 2000) and kills per game (5.68, 1997), as well as a single-game mark for kills (48, 1998). In addition, he ranks second all-time in kills. (more).
With the induction of the class of 2007, the NYU Athletics Hall of
Fame has 176 members. |
