NYU Welcomes Donna Layne into Hall of Fame
New York University alumna Donna Layne, a 1994 graduate of NYU's School of Education with a bachelor's degree in communication studies, has been inducted into the NYU Athletics Hall of Fame. Layne, who currently resides in Albany, New York, earned numerous accolades in both basketball and track and field. A two-time Kodak Basketball All-American and University Athletic Association Player of the Year, Layne's name appears throughout the NYU record books in scoring, field goals, field goal percentage, rebounding, free throws and steals. In a single game on March 3, 1994, Layne connected for 17 field goals, setting current NYU and Coles Sports Center records. Layne earned All-Metropolitan Division III Player of the Year and NYU team MVP honors as a senior. Her other basketball accolades included All-ECAC Second Team Honors (1993), ECAC Weekly Honor Roll (1993, 1994), NYU Best Offensive Player honors (1993), NYU Best All-Around Player honors (1992) and NYU Rookie of the Year honors (1991). Layne was a dominant force in the UAA, leading the Association in steals (1994) and in scoring (1993). During Layne's tenure on the court, NYU advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times, including two trips to the Sweet 16. In track, Layne broke four NYU records in her one season of competition. She earned three medals at the UAA Championships with second-place finishes in the 400-meter run and the 4x400-meter relay, as well as a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash. Layne, along with fellow NYU alumni, Harold Bogrow (1941-track), Desmond Margetson (1948-tennis) and Michael Watt (1988-swimming), were inducted into New York University's Hall of Fame on October 21, 2000. The four athletes were honored for their collegiate and lifetime accomplishments, along with their commitment to NYU Athletics.
