October 21, 2000

NYU alumni, Harold Bogrow, Donna Layne, Desmond Margetson and Michael Watt, were inducted into New York University's Athletics Hall of Fame on October 21, 2000. The four athletes were honored for their collegiate and lifetime accomplishments, along with their commitment to NYU Athletics.

Bogrow, a 1941 graduate of NYU's School of Education who added a master's degree in 1964, was the captain of the Violets' varsity track and field squad in the early 1940's. He was honored in 1941 as a member of the NCAA Coaches' All-America Track Team and also ran on two world record-breaking relay teams: the indoor one-mile relay (March 15, 1940) and the outdoor 2,400-yard relay (May 23, 1941). He also helped NYU to win the first-ever Metropolitan Intercollegiate Indoor Championship by winning the 600-meter run. Bogrow currently resides in Dunwoody, Georgia.

Layne, a 1994 graduate of NYU's School of Education, earned numerous accolades in both basketball and track. A two-time Kodak Basketball All-American and University Athletic Association Player of the Year, Layne's name appears throughout the NYU record books in scoring, field goals, field goal percentage, rebounding, free throws and steals. Layne also was named All-Metropolitan Division III Player of the Year and NYU MVP as a senior. In track, she broke four NYU records in her one season competing. Layne currently resides in Albany, New York.

Margetson, best known for his invention of the indoor tennis bubble, graduated from NYU in 1948 with a B.A. in engineering. A three-year member of the Violets' tennis team, Margetson led the team to an 8-3 record while playing #1 singles in 1948. He holds a United States Tennis Association (USTA) Lifetime Achievement Award and has won national age group titles in the steeplechase (1986), high jump (1983) and the indoor 3,000-meter run (1998). He also earned the 1992 World 8K Cross Country Championship title. Currently, Margetson is an engineer at the New York City Department of Design and Construction in Long Island City, and he participates in masters and veterans track and field athletics, as well as tennis. Margetson currently resides in Manhattan.

Watt, a 1988 graduate of NYU's Stern School of Business, was NYU's first NCAA All-American Swimmer. A two-time All-American, he finished fourth in the 100 yard breastroke and fifth in the 200 yard breastroke at the 1988 NCAA Championships. Watt also captured first-place and second-place honors at both the UAA and Metropolitan Championships in 1988. He was a two-year member of the Hong Kong Olympic Swim Team (1984, 1988) and holds NYU and Coles Sports Center records in the 200 yard and 200 meter breaststroke. Currently, Watt is a financial manager and Asia/Pacific CFO at Lucent Technologies in Hong Kong.

With the induction of the class of 2000, the NYU Athletics Hall of Fame, which was established in 1971, now has 156 members.
