George King

New York University alumnus, George G. King, has been selected for induction into the NYU Athletics Hall of Fame. King, a 1956 graduate of NYU's School of Education, currently resides in Canton,Massachusetts.

King was a two-time cross country All-American and two-time national champion in the one mile run (1955, 1956). In his three years on the varsity, King captured five Met College titles and was a finalist at the 1956 Olympic trials in both the steeplechase and the 5000m. King was also a member of some of NYU's best relay teams, anchoring the distance medley team that garnered top honors at the Penn Relays (1955), and helping set the old Boston Garden record in the two mile relay. In 1955, he won the IC4A two mile outdoor race. In 1956, he finished first in the IC4A two mile indoor race and set a championship record at Madison Square Garden (9:07.0).

King continued his involvement in track and field after his collegiate career. In 1958, he finished second to record-holding Ron Delany in the 1958 Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden. A teacher and coach in Canton, Massachusetts for 40 years before retiring, he was inducted into the Massachusetts Track Coaches Hall of Fame in 2000.

King, along with fellow NYU alumni Dorothy Hafner deCapriles (1932-fencing), Oleg Geller (1996-diving), Arthur Tauber (1942-fencing), will be inducted into New York University's Hall of Fame at a dinner to be held on October 13, 2001. The four athletes will be honored for their collegiate and lifetime accomplishments, along with their commitment to NYU Athletics.
