2006 Inductees

On Sunday, May 7, 2006, four former student-athletes will be honored at the New York University Athletics Hall of Fame inductions & Student Athlete Alumni reception. NYU will recognize the great accomplishments of Howard Goodman (men's fencing, 1965), Gennady Gurin (men's swimming, 1994), Leslie MacMitchell (men's track, 1942) and Jennifer Miani (women's basketball, 1988). The Department of Athletics will also pay tribute to the great teams that played under basketball coaching legend Lou Rossini from 1959-1971. The event is scheduled for 2:00pm at the Palladium Athletic Facility.

Goodman, Goodman, a 1965 graduate of NYU's School of Commerce, was a member of the Violets' men's fencing team. The 1965 NCAA Sabre Champion, Goodman placed second in 1964 and fourth in 1963. A three-time All-American, he helped lead NYU to two consecutive (1964 & 1965) second-place finishes at the NCAA Championships. A two-time Intercollegiate Fencing Association (IFA) Sabre Champion, Goodman was selected as both the team MVP and NYU's Varsity Athlete of the Year in 1965. He was selected as a member of the U.S. Veteran Team that competed against the German National Veteran Team in Lancaster, Germany, in 1997. Most recently, Goodman won a bronze medal in the 60+ Sabre Competition at the National Championships. That victory earned him a sport on the World Championship Team, which competed in Krems, Austria, in 2004. A former CPA for Deloitte and Touche, Goodman is currently employed at Vornado Realty Trust.

Gurin, a 1994 graduate of NYU's College of Arts and Science, was a member of the men's swimming & diving team. He was a three-time NCAA All-American in the 100-yard breaststroke and a four-time NCAA qualifier in that event. A three-time University Athletic Association (UAA) Champion in the 100-yard breaststroke, Gurin also won a UAA Championship in the 200-yard breaststroke. During his four-year career, Gurin established five NYU individual records and was a member of four Violet relay record- setting teams. Gurin still holds the 100-yard breaststroke (58.11), 100-meter breaststroke (1:06.81), and 200-meter individual medley (2:13.82) records. A native of Odessa, Ukraine, Gurin currently resides in Brooklyn, NY.

MacMitchell, a 1942 graduate of NYU's School of Education, was a member of the Violets' men's track & field team. MacMitchell, who passed away earlier this year, won the Sullivan Award as the country's top amateur athlete in 1941. That was a very special year, as MacMitchell won the NCAA Outdoor Mile, the AAU 1,500 meters, and tied the world indoor mile record (4:07.4). MacMitchell ran on NYU's world record (10:05.50) indoor distance medley relay team and captured 79 of the 105 individual races in which he entered. Also in 1941, he anchored three winning relay teams at the Penn Relays, was the Metropolitan Champion in both the 800-yard run and the mile, and ran a meet- and collegiate-record time of 4:08 in winning the IC4A Mile Championship. After graduating from NYU, MacMitchell served his country in World War II and earned the rank of lieutenant while patrolling both the Atlantic and Pacific. Upon leaving the Navy, MacMitchell served as Executive Assistant to Brooklyn Dodgers president Walter O'Malley.

Miani, a 1988 graduate of NYU's School of Education, was a member of the Violets' women's basketball team. She became the third NYU women's player to collect 1,000 career points and is now ninth on the all-time scoring list with 1,191. At the time of her graduation, Miani's name was prominent in the NYU record book. She finished third all-time in scoring average (10.6), and second in field goals made (524), free throw percentage (72.4), and field goals made in a single game (15). Miani also helped lead the Violets to a total of 79 wins, including consecutive 20-win seasons during her freshman and sophomore years. She was voted NYU's Best Offensive Player three-times, was a member of the 1985-86 team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament's "Sweet Sixteen". She was also a member of the 1987-88 team that captured the ECAC Metro Championship and was selected as the Tournament MVP. Miani currently resides in Boston, Massachusetts, and works as an attorney at Day, Berry & Howard LLP.

With the induction of the class of 2006, the NYU Athletics Hall of Fame has 172 members.
