This is not an easy race and it was not an easy day. The swim
course is a triangulation and marked with many buoys. Maybe too
many, and several athletes were seen following the shorter sprint
tri swim course and even the red colored swim caps on other competitors!
The sun was in the eyes of participants on the return trip making
sighting even harder. No PR swims on this course!
The Bike starts with a significant uphill and thereafter athletes
were treated to "rolling hills". Add in a nice little
headwind and this was bound to be tough time in the saddle. Spinning
an easier gear and being conservative on the Out portion was the
key, and some followed this plan more closely than others. The
return trip was mostly downhill with a great tailwind. Athletes
were flying. Who wants to waste a good downhill or tailwind? Net
result? TIRED LEGS for the 13.1M run.
The Run looked more like a death march for so many athletes, but
the NYU TRICLUB members performed well above average and deserve
high compliment. While most were wilting, we were blossoming (well,
at least relatively) .
Sound nutrition was the key element in this event and good pre-race
planning helped most TRICLUB members ingest adequate calories
and fluids to survive. There are always exceptions to the rule
who treat events as a weight loss plan. News flash - walking on
the run does not burn many calories!
This was the first Half Ironman event for 4 of our NYU TRICLUB
participants. They looked like seasoned veterans more than novices.
CONGATULATIONS!!
