Despite the forecast of
rain, racers were treated to a dry day. Dry except for the excessive
sweating due to the high humidity on the run. The 441 triathletes
started in waves separated by 3 minutes. The swim was flat but not
as fast as previous years. Apparently .3M is not .3M is not .3M
Many swimmers felt that this .3M was a long .3M, and swim times
reflected this. Several of the swimmers reported feeling "weedy".
This was interpreted by their coach as feeling puny, tired or just
off form since there were very few weeds in the lake this year.
Transition times are included in the swim times listed above, so
some of the slower than expected swim times are the result of rather
leisurely transitions. Some of our team took their merry time getting
out of their rubber bondage suits. If it takes more time to set
out of your wetsuit than it saves you in a short swim, and the water
is not freezing, go natural. Several of our team swam in just their
tri shorts/swimsuit and had speedy transitions. Case closed on the
WimpSuits in warm water on short swims.
The bike course is moderately challenging with constant gradient
changes that make it hard to get into a smooth rhythm. This course
however is no harder than Central Park and most of the team felt
strong on the bike.
The run course is quite flat and simple with the exception of one
small rise at Willett Road. I patrolled this molehill and witnessed
no walking by our team. Good effort.
All in all, a great showing by NYU TRICLUB. Our traveling team
was a great mix of fresh tri gonnabe's and wily veterans. This
was the first triathlon for several of our new TRICLUB members
and they all had marvelous performances. Congratulations to all.
